"it" - The Image Tool

The scriptable multi-image tool

The Image Viewer

"it" is Pixar's imaging tool, and has been designed to make working with images in the heat of production as efficient as possible.

"it" is a scriptable framebuffer/render viewer that has a powerful image processing back end called IceMan that allows artists to manipulate and composite renders directly from RenderMan.

Image Management

"it" offers many features for working with images in production such as: organizing many images at once, providing tools for comparing images quickly, and also adding notes directly to images. Secondary outputs (AOVs) can also be automatically displayed in "it," and HDR imagery can also be viewed with full luminance data.

Catalogs

In the world of "it" images are stored in catalogs. You can create as many catalogs as you like, and entire collections of renderings can be saved as catalogs, which is perfect for reviewing later.

"IceMan" — Scriptable Image Processing

Additionally, "it" is also a fast and powerful imaging tool that is capable of production-qualilty image manipulation and compositing usually found only in high-end standalone products. A full featured compositing language, IceMan, allows complicated compositing operations to be performed on any number of elements. Compositing jobs can be automatically launched by Alfred.

The Console

The console is probably the last place new users are going to want to visit. But this is where the power of "it" is truly realized. The console speaks in Tcl: the scripting language behind RenderMan Studio. It also provides the interface to IceMan, the "it" image processing engine. With IceMan and Tcl we can write, and execute, powerful image processing operations on the images in our catalog. This can be used for immediately compositing secondary outputs, color correction, or custom effects.
