The Advanced Plug-in for Maya
RenderMan® for Maya Pro is the core of RenderMan Studio ... RFM Pro connects Autodesk's Maya with the rest of the RenderMan tools ... from Slim - a powerful shader authoring tool, to "it" - an image tool, to Alfred - the job distribution tool, and critically to Pixar's core renderer, RenderMan Pro Server.
What makes it "Pro"?
It's possible to directly manipulate 3D data outside of Maya the animation package with RFM Pro ... and that has big implications in production. In the world of RenderMan, this 3D data is called RIB, and it's one of the key features of RFM Pro: the ability to export, import, filter, merge and simply hack RIB to your hearts content. With the magic of RIB, you can assemble scenes of incredible complexity that are far larger than anything Maya could ever display interactively ... or write custom tools that can create procedural effects that would be impossible in Maya. RIB is a useful tool.

RenderMan for Maya Pro offers the same ease-of-use found with RenderMan for Maya, and doesn't require extra knowledge to use if you wish to work within the normal Maya workflow. However, for those who want to push the software as far as it can go, RenderMan for Maya Pro offers unlimited possibilities.

RenderMan for Maya was designed with ease-of-use and affordability in mind, without sacrificing the most important features of RenderMan: speed, stability, and quality. Those who require the versatility of RIB, the robust, highly programmable shading tools in Slim, and the dynamic capabilities of plug-in procedurals will appreciate the power of our premium, high-end products: RenderMan Studio and RenderMan Pro Server.

One of the key features of RenderMan for Maya Pro is support for RenderMan Pro Server, Pixar's server-side renderer which is the backbone of Pixar's own renderfarm. With RenderMan Studio artists and TD's can use Alfred to easily dispatch jobs from RenderMan Studio directly to a renderfarm populated with RenderMan Pro Server. These tools form an efficient workflow for rendering visual effects.
RenderMan Studio can render either to RenderMan Pro Server or to an (optional) internal renderer. For both preview or batch rendering, the internal renderer has some benefits. But generally speaking, the shading and lighting artists in a studio will want RenderMan Studio on their workstations, and the render farm will usually be home to RenderMan Pro Server.
