Great Looking Skin
Create a broad range
of realistic skins
and other looks ...
fast and intuitively
Fully Traced SSS
Subsurface scattering is important for creating realistic translucent materials such as skin, flesh, fat, fruits, milk, wax, and marble. It's especially important to make hero characters look appealing and perfect. RenderMan offers an advanced method for creating these effects fast and efficiently ... using Pixar Surface, the amazingly capable surface shader.
Powerful & Versatile
Pixar Surface is able to simulate highly complex subsurface scattering effects ... in fact, Pixar Surface provides several types of modes to choose from (for anyone keeping count those mode are Jenson Dipole, Deon Better Dipole, Burley Normalized, and Multiple Mean Free Paths). Some modes are optimized for realistic human skin, some are better for material like wax, giving you the ability to get the perfect result.
Intuitive Look Development
Dialing specific looks for skin is fast, and there is no need for any kind of pre-pass or baking process. Being able to see how the parameters effect the depth of the scatter in interactive time, is invaluable when developing "that specific look" you need.
"After the incredibly positive reception of MPC's first major movie release rendered in RIS: The Jungle Book, we are extremely excited about the many new features in RenderMan 21. With increased rendering performance, advanced materials & lights, and all around refinements, it continues to validate our choice as MPC's main renderer and it will be used on all our films going forward.”
Chief Technology Officer, MPC
"RenderMan's RIS is an amazingly powerful tool that enabled us to meet the technically challenging demands of Piper and achieve its distinctive show look. We discovered on several occasions that a technique we thought previously infeasible, such as instancing millions of modeled refractive sand grains, or putting a thin layer of rippling water over much of our set, was now in reach and gave us the look we were after. Live Re-rendering in particular saved us enormous amounts of time.”
Supervising Technical Director for Piper at Pixar
"RenderMan’s new RIS mode was incredibly stable and consistent on 'Ant-Man.' Everybody was blown away by the quality of the renders even in very early tests. With such a radically different internal architecture, RIS is a world away from any previous version, but still retains many features that made RenderMan so successful in the past.”
