RenderMan Studio and RenderMan for Maya are now combined at a new attractive price
What is the relationship between RenderMan Studio and other Pixar products?
RenderMan Studio is a collection of independent software tools that together takes data from Maya (or other applications) and sends it to a render farm using the RenderMan Pro Server renderer. Think of RenderMan Studio as the artist and TD’s seat sharing the memory footprint of Maya, and RenderPro Server as the remote batch render farm seat running independently with a higher degree of memory efficiency. RenderMan Studio also contains an internal embedded renderer that enables you to both preview your scenes and render locally as a standalone workstation seat.
What are the main components of RenderMan Studio?
RenderMan Studio consists of the following software tools:
• RenderMan for Maya, an integrated interface for Maya that acts as the "bridge" between Maya and a RenderMan render farm
• Slim, an interactive graphical shader editor.
• "it", a powerful script based compositor.
• An embedded renderer for preview, testing, and final output
• Interactive re-rendering system
• Tractor, a scriptable render farm management system.
How does RenderMan Studio fit into my Maya rendering pipeline?
RenderMan Studio can be used to render in one of two ways:
a) For larger scale projects, RenderMan Studio is the interface to a remote render farm using RenderMan Pro Server. It does this by generating RIB files from RenderMan for Maya that are then sent to RenderMan Pro Server either via the Tractor monitor that handles job scheduling or in small scale situations by a Local Queue utility. Renderman Studio also includes the Slim shader creator/editor enabling artists and TD’s to set up custom shaders in a GUI, interactive re-rendering and relighting tools, and the "it" image compositing tool.
b) For render preview or local final output, RenderMan Studio also contains an embedded RenderMan renderer accessible inside Maya. For final rendering this is a more integrated and “Maya centric” solution, but it is not as efficient or configurable as the batch RenderMan Pro Server as it has to run within the software limitations and memory footprint of Maya.
What happened to RenderMan for Maya?
The previously standalone RenderMan for Maya product has been fully incorporated into RenderMan Studio and the combined solution is available at a new price.
How is RenderMan Studio different from the previous RenderMan for Maya?
RenderMan Studio contains a more flexible and extensible version of the previous RenderMan for Maya plug-in with a number of extra features. For example you can export RIB files to remote RenderMan Pro Server licenses and work with DSOs. RenderMan Studio also contains additional supporting tools such as Slim, “it”, and Tractor. Everything created in RenderMan Studio will render exactly the same way in RenderMan for Maya. No additional setup or workflow is required.
How much does RenderMan Studio now cost?
RenderMan Studio is $1,300 (US dollars) per license, including the embedded renderer.
I am an existing RenderMan for Maya user. How do I upgrade to RenderMan studio?
Upgrading to RenderMan Studio is easy and straight forwards. Please check our pricelist or contact email@example.com for more information.
I already have some existing RenderMan Pro Server licenses. Do I need the embedded RenderMan renderer to test and preview frames?
No, you can send RIB files directly to RenderMan Pro Server and easily render test frames. The main advantage of the embedded renderer is that it is more "Maya centric" and offers a more integrated preview capability. Please look at the RenderMan Pro Server FAQ for a current list of rendering features.
Can RenderMan Studio be used as a render farm renderer?
Yes, though primarily engineered as an interactive workstation solution, RenderMan Studio with the embedded renderer is usable on either artist workstations or in a remote render farm environment, however it is not as efficient or configurable as RenderMan Pro Server as it has to run within the software limitations and memory footprint of Maya. Sending RIB files to a dedicated stand alone render farm running RenderMan Pro Server allows RenderMan to be customized for greater performance and flexibility.
How many threads and invocations (instances) can be run from the embedded renderer in RenderMan Studio at any one time?
With RenderMan Studio you may use unlimited threads per platform, with one license for maximum efficiency.
What support options are available for RenderMan Studio?
A full annual maintenance offering is available for RenderMan Studio including all upgrades and hotline technical support within the term of maintenance. There is also a dedicated online support forum and many of your questions may be answered on this forum by either the RenderMan support and development team or by other customers who have encountered similar issues.
Is RenderMan Studio available as either a floating or node-locked license?
Yes, RenderMan Studio is available as either node locked or floating license at no extra cost.
